More on the Niva

Whether it’s exploring the North Pole or setting the record for highest point reached by a motorized vehicle (at Mount Everest’s base camp, no less!), the Lada Niva has always been a trailblazer, conquering rough, rural landscapes wherever it goes. Originally created for the villagers and farmers of the rural USSR, the Niva is the picture of durability and reliability, having been subjected to trials over some of the Soviet Union’s toughest terrains, from the Ural Mountains of Siberia to the deserts of the Kazakh SSR. Like in other post-Soviet countries, the Niva can be seen everywhere in Armenia – it’s that popular. So, wherever you choose to roam in Armenia’s vast countryside, our Gazan will get you where you want to go.

We’ve all got that friend that tells the best stories (you know the one). Our Lada Niva – Gazan – (meaning “monster” in Armenian) is that friend on your adventure. With in-depth audio guides to complement your road trip, Gazan has the intel on all the people you’ll meet and the places you’ll see, as you meet and see them.

Choose your route

Road tripping for good.

Our routes are designed to not only connect you with local people and experiences that are off the beaten path, but to also help bring both revenue and attention to these communities. We encourage you to spend your money at small, local businesses, especially in rural areas, where you can experience the best of Armenian warmth and hospitality.

Rather than treat the stops on your chosen itinerary like boxes that need to be ticked, we hope you’ll travel slowly, at your own pace, and get a real feel for these parts of the country that not all travelers get to experience.

FAQ

Questions? Concerns? Burning existential queries on life?
We can help (with the first two).

  • Your flight is not included in the cost of the trip. We recommend getting in contact with us first and confirming the availability of our adventure vehicle for your preferred road trip dates before you book your flights. Just submit a request above and our team will get in touch with you.

  • A Soviet adventure vehicle, a highly-curated road trip itinerary, preloaded GPS-enabled device with all the itinerary routes and stops, and 24/7 customer assistance all come standard with each booking. Additional add-ons like a driver are available at extra cost. Please also note that experiences like wine tasting and museum visits as well as overnight stays at guesthouses or hotels are not included in the price of your booking.

  • Yes, after your booking is confirmed, we will send you a detailed itinerary for you to review before your arrival.

  • Drivers do not come standard on this road trip. That means you (or someone in your party) will be running the show on your adventure as the driver. If you do want a driver, however, we will gladly provide a professional driver at extra cost.

  • Drivers with an international driving permit or a driver's license from a country that is signatory to the Vienna Convention on Road Traffic can drive in Armenia. You’ll need to come to Armenia with a valid international driver’s permit in order to do the experience. As a reminder, Canada, Lebanon, and the United States are not part of the Vienna Convention. Click here for a full list of all participating countries. If you come from a country that notes the type of vehicle on licenses (manual/automatic gear), then you should make sure it is noted in your permit. US drivers can get an AAA international driver’s permit. Keep in mind that the adventure vehicle currently available is manual. If you do not know how to drive manual but still want to discover Armenia with us, we highly recommend you practice driving manually before you arrive in Armenia.

  • Our expert mechanics check that everything is running smoothly before each trip. However, should you have car trouble while on the road, simply call our 24/7 concierge desk and we will send assistance your way ASAP. You’ll find the number for the concierge desk in your itinerary. We’re here for you 24/7!

  • No! That’s the beauty of this road trip experience. The itineraries are there to guide you to the best experiences in Armenia, but they’re also totally optional. At any point during your trip, you can choose to skip a site, a town, even a whole day’s worth of things to see, and do something different with the time that you have the vehicle. That being said, we’ve designed these routes to feature what we believe are the best sites and experiences to see, from Armenia’s greatest hits to lesser-known wonders, so we highly recommend you utilize them to make the most of your experience.

  • Experiences like wine tasting and museum visits, and overnight stays at guesthouses or hotels are not included in the price of your booking. Our concierge desk will gladly book experiences and overnight stays for you. Please note that most experiences and guesthouses require prior notice of your arrival to make sure they can accommodate you and that availability may be limited, especially during summer months, so the sooner we book the better. We recommend you review your road trip itinerary before you arrive in Armenia, and let our team know what experiences you want to do, and where you want to stay. We’ll take care of booking for you before your road trip commences.

  • In addition to a digital and printed version of our highly-curated road trip itinerary, you will receive a preloaded GPS-enabled device with all the itinerary routes and stops, for easy navigation across Armenia.

  • There are generally no government regulations regarding camping in natural public spaces in Armenia, apart from state-protected reserves. Just make sure you aren’t trespassing on private property and be mindful of region and season. For example, summer in the South can get quite dry, and starting campfires is advised against.

  • Overall, Armenia is a safe place to travel, with a considerably low overall crime rate (lower than those of the United States and many Western European countries). You can drive just about anywhere in Armenia, though road conditions may be poor depending on remoteness or time of year – the colder months yield poorer road conditions. If possible, we recommend you exercise caution when driving outside of cities and towns in the dark due to lack of street lighting. Furthermore, we advise against travel within 5km of the border between Armenia and Azerbaijan, which is closed. For more information on safety in Armenia, click here.

  • The interior of your vehicle will be thoroughly cleaned before your trip. That includes disinfection of high-touch areas inside the car — door handles, keys, seat belts, seat adjusters, window controls, mirrors, gear shift, wheel, signal indicator, all dashboard controls, armrest, and vents. Disinfectant hand gel and face masks will also be provided to you inside the vehicle.
